Hibiscus – a skin quenching hormone boosting bestie
Over the last couple years hibiscus has become one of my favorite herbal infusions to make (an infusion is just a tea made with something other than the tea plant but can more or less be used interchangably).
It’s beautiful, slight sweet yet tangy, creates such a rich color, adds depth to my tea blends, is a feast for the eyes, and turns out is incredibly beneficial too!
Hibiscus is extremely high in antioxidants and also supports:
- Hydration – hibscus is a natural diuretic, helping to remove salt from the body while keeping you hydrated
- Immunity – hibiscus is high in vitamin C
- Hormones – the antioxidants help to balance hormones naturally, and has also been shown to reduce mood swings!
- Skin – Known as nature’s botox! “The flower is naturally high in both antioxidants and alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs). Both compounds help to improve the youthful appearance of the skin. It’s astringent nature also helps to tighten the skin.” [source]
- Iron – the flower is blood building and can help naturally support iron levels
- Metabolism – Research has found that hibiscus can help speed up metabolism by lowering the absorption of starch and glucose!
I find that its taste is so pleasant, I can make an iced tea out of it even my 8 year old daughter and non-tea loving husband enjoy!
Especially with a touch of honey and splash of lime, for good energy (honey) and enhanced cooling affects (lime)!
You could drink this on its own, use as a base for a cocktail or mocktail, and sip year round to replenish.
Add a dash of sea salt and coconut water and it’s even more of a mineral & hydration superpower!
